I'm a huge ABBA fan (largely because of Agnetha Fältskog, who wore an outfit in her younger days similar to one which Faith wears in the cartoon above, only with a heart over her tummy instead of a cross) but I cringe at what I've seen/heard of the hugely popular Mamma Mia musical, which seems ultra-hokey. Believe me, if I think something's hokey, it must be hokey.

Disney Channel Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus performs, and Faith and Timothy wonder if she'll eventually pull a Paris or a Britney (although Timothy's 'concern' is more than partially purient.) This cartoon alludes both to the fact that Miley is a self-professed born-again Christian as well as the recent 'body double' controversy where the young star briefly incorporates a look alike while she changes costume backstage. No big deal that; we used to call it 'show business.'

Don't Be A Schmuckabee...Vote For Huckabee!

Faithmouse and friends scat for Mike Huckabee.

I've been a proud Freeper for years and as critical of Mr. Huckabee as anyone else... but I've become sympathetic to the Governor of Arkansas in reaction to the increasingly snarky attacks upon his faith from many within his own 'compassionate' party.

Look-if you don't like Huck because he's been weak fiscally or doesn't have foreign policy experience (neither did Reagan or Clinton), that's fair. Attacking the guy because he wears his faith up front and solely because of his faith, even though he's governed secularly...if fellow wing-nuts succeed at wounding Huck just to keep Mr. Christian social conservative from upsetting the power cart, I suspect evangelicals who helped push Bush over the top in 2004 will walk in 2008, myself included. Perhaps the Republican Party does deserve to get creamed this year as impetus for rediscovering its soul.

John McCain is currently in first place in the national polls and he's King Of The RINOs. If you compare the destructive power these two men have wreaked upon individual liberty, Mike Huckabee comes in a far second, yet he's receiving many times the criticism McCain deserves. If Huckabee is guilty of anything it is for being pragmatic while governing a very blue state. Stories regarding what Mike Huckabee's son once did to a dog are signs of the desperation of Republican careerists who wish to purge the platform of any serious commitment to values, as if this could be escapable for any political party. Not only that, but the argument against raising millions to improve roads and schools in Arkansas while we're spending billions for the same in Iraq and Afghanistan simply won't cut it, not this year. Hillary and Obama are leading in the national polls for exactly this reason.

So for what it is worth I've turned Huckabee. Freaked out fellow conservatives who suspect he'll turn Carter on us can mitigate the Huck Effect by electing congress persons and reps who'll keep him from selling Little Rock to the Saudis or constructing a chunnel to Brownsville, Texas. Not that I don't agree he may try.

It's eight months to the opening ceremony in August, but we've established position and the search terms we've targeted will only received more and more traffic as the year progresses.

Reverend Billy Graham

First off let me assure you that the great Billy Graham has not died. I've been painting so many Catholic portraits as of late I felt I should balance things out with at least one nice Protestant.

I think I have Bob Ross disease. More often I catch myself thinking while painting-well, that's a happy little earlobe! or that's a happy tie! which must be because I'm painting quickly; the first application of oil in the painting above was completed in about five hours or so. The only drawback to my fast painting technique is that it requires (the smallest amount possible, because I detest the stuff) of linseed oil. It helps with paint flow, but it retards drying time like crazy, which inhibits my accustomed 'sfumato' or layering technique. For Billy I'm experimenting with a faster drying oil, so we'll see how the painting surface 'feels' in the morning.

Painting in the studio far from the tendrils of the internet has re-introduced me to the world of talk radio. Our own local host Jason Lewis is probably my favorite (he's filled in for Rush a few times recently over the holidays) in addition to the nationally syndicated Mark Levin, who I imagined as a Sammy Davis Jr. impersonator until the first time I heard him scream at someone. I seem to learn the most from these two, although today on Jason's show I learned that Catholic league president Bill Donohue is under the mistaken impression that our own Archbishop Flynn is a conservative. I believe the Archbishop would take that as an insult.

Speaking of our own local Catholic community, Martha the secretary at St. Agnes was good enough to procure for me a copy of the 2003-2004 St. Agnes church directory, which contains this picture of the rarely photographed (he hates it) Father Robert Altier (and, I can't mention this enough, celebrant at my and the original Faithmouses wedding a decade or two ago)-

An earlier version of my 'Dancing Beijing' protest logo has appeared in a 杯葛pucking奧運圖像收集區！UWants.com Olympic games protest cartoon compilation thread from Hong Kong, which I think is pretty nifty. I haven't found a similar variation of my 'chains' idea so it would be great to see the image spread across the net, especially in Asia itself. My original post focused on repression against the unsanctioned Catholic Church in China; but hey-this is China, where there's repression enough to go around for everyone.

I invite you to grab and post the above image(s) on your own site, with a return link to either this blog or the UWant forum. Fancy up the image with appropriate alt tags; also repeat these keywords in sentences within close proximity to the image post. Together we can drive the Beijing protest logo higher into Google and similar search engine results before the Olympics games commence in August of this year.

I know a few additional SEO tricks which I'll employ behind the scenes in this humble Googlebomb culture jamming enterprise. New posts are needed in order to help lift 'dancing Beijing man in chains' from #17 to #1, and to create a presence in text results as well. I see that the image link in Goggle goes to the original post from last year (we're being rewarded for both age and relevance, and also I've set Google Analytics to browse my URL more often); since people will discover that original post first that's where I'll add links to downloadable higher resolution versions of our image which people can then use as protest posters.

Our search term is good (don't want to repeat it here too often to avoid penalization) but 'Beij*** O*******' would also be effective, as would '2008 O**' 'Chinese O**.' etc. I'll keep an eye on related search term movers and shakers. Great work, team!

Blessed Mother Teresa, and other paintings in progress

Another completed Blessed Mother Teresa portrait. Did you know that British author Christopher Hitchens was the sole witness the Vatican called to testify against Mother Teresa's beatification in 2003? His opinion was judged to be without merit, which probably led to his penning the irrational God Is Not Great, in which he argues religious belief is entirely without merit.


A Pope John Paul II the Great portrait in progress. All high tones for now in this first application of oil; you can see the original black acrylic underpainting around the edges of the canvas.


A Reverend Billy Graham portrait in progress. How can you not have him with a Bible? The time period here is from the Johnny Cash era, around 1969 or so when his hair was just beginning to turn white. My main reference material is from YouTube crusade videos, although I did purchase a 1960 Life Magazine issue from Midway books in St. Paul today to help with the eyes.

For this portrait I've applied a water/gesso/clear acrylic gel base coat over Polyflax canvas and then sketched out the figure with a black Derwent flat compressed charcoal pencil. After spray fixing the drawing to keep it from running I apply a second acrylic gel coat tinted with ochre and burnt sienna. More than likely I'll apply a third acrylic coat (well watered so as not to lose our canvas texture) consisting of some final dark and lights before proceeding with the oil application. I'm hoping to execute the final stage alla prima using a Vermeer-like technique, although I really dislike sticky and long-drying mediums. Attracts cat hair.

The “Howard Dean” Trophy For Leaving Liberals Screaming and Sputtering: Every year for the last, oh, two years or so, the City Pages - the occasionally brilliant but always reliably hip-”counterculture”-lefty local “alternative” freebie ‘zine - gives two “Best Blog” awards. The “Best Liberal Blog” is generally stridently, constantly political (”MNVolved”, I think, in ‘06, although it didn’t survive much beyond the award, and “Clucking Stool” in ‘07); the “Best Conservative Blog” has been the one that talks the least about politics. In ‘06 it was Nihilist in Golf Pants, and the award seems to have gutted the spirit of the once-prolific stalwarts. But in ‘07, the “award” went to Dan Lacey of “Faithmouse”. Perhaps trying to avoid the City Pages “Best New Band” jinx (the “winners” inevitably break up) Lacey turned around and sold the “award” on EBay. It drew sputtering from the usual assortment of left-leaning waxy yellow blogbuildup, but who cared? The quietest blog smackdown of the year, it was also by far the best.

I promise, Mitch, never to sell my priceless Shootie on Ebay.
