New York Times Front Page Story
Randy's story was also picked up by a large number of online news sites and additional papers. Here's how the story looked in the A section of today's local Minneapolis St.Paul Star Tribune-
The leading search term query today in my stats, handily beating terms related to 'Obama art' or 'Obama unicorn art' is 'dan lacey pancake paintings.'
So, let's paint pancakes!
Five New Paintings
Barack Obama, speaking.
President Obama, painted in muted skin tones.
Michelle Obama smiling. The last three pieces were all painted in oil over a base of metallic gold acrylic.
The newest painting in my continuing series of male nudes. I have another in the series almost completed.
Susan Boyle, overcome with emotion. This was taken from the first video; I've been so busy I haven't had time to catch Susan's concluding performance. Better luck next time, Susan!

Hi, Gary!
Gary with two of my Obama paintings which he purchased though Ebay, in a photo which appears in this Sunday's online New York Times article on Obama art. Thank you, Randy Kennedy and the New York Times. It's currently tough going for many artists, so I appreciate the acknowledgement. I haven't seen the print edition of the story, but by request I emailed the Times a half dozen print-ready images of Obama unicorns for the article.
If you're up early, tomorrow's CBS News Sunday Morning will show my Susan Boyle Cat Duet painting.
Thanky-thanky.
Barack Obama Nude On A Unicorn, And Other Interesting Paintings Picture Book
Barack Obama Nude On A Unicorn, And Other Interesting Paintings is now available through Lulu.
In addition to a number of Obama unicorn paintings, this collection features some of my more popular pancake paintings, including full page versions of the most popular Sarah Palin and John McCain pancakes referenced in the NYTimes article. I actually have at least three additional pancake paintings of both John and Sarah, but they'll have to wait for another book.

Art Studio, Friday Night
Hanging in the art studio on a Friday night. The art studio looks deceptively like an unfinished basement.
A few things I've been working on-
Marzipan The Cat from Great Britain purchased a painting of a house made out of pancakes, but it never arrived, so I'm making a replacement. Many times when I paint I'll start with a thin color wash, and as surface dries I build up more opaque color. The walkway in this painting is made out of sausage patties.
For Sam, a new painting of William F. Buckley. Sam discovered my original painting of Mr. Buckley via Google image search. Most of my painting lately have been on sheet canvas 8 by 10 inches in size or smaller, but this is a stretched 16 by 20 inch canvas.

Update 3/2011 - I've learned this photograph from a few years ago of my painting area ( in amazingly clean condition; you can actually see the floor ) is a top image result on Google for art studio.
Thanks to Conny Norlund for including same in her post on how to get good at art. I doubt a current photo of the same view would be a top choice for her today.
I found her post interesting...art improvement suggestions aside, I wonder if Conny has a sub file for pics of nude artists wearing pancake hats in her 4000 photo reference. ?
-and just for the record; this is not Liz's dad+uncle+godfather's collection of unusual art in the United Kingdom. Flattered, though.

This is the most recent oil painting in my continuing Susan Boyle series. This painting is currently being auctioned on Ebay. The closing date of the auction is Monday, June 1, 2009.

MTV's Best Week Ever
I've stopped posting collections of online references to my paintings, but I got a kick out of this appearance of one of my paintings on MTV's Best Week Ever blog, especially since the original oil painting sold for $30. Thanks, MTV. I still can't get my paintings into galleries or in print, so I very much appreciative the occasional acknowledgement such as the recent City Pages interview or ZME usage. Posts such as this help to bring more awareness to my Ebay auctions, so thanks.
On a lark, and because I've now had about three sites refer to myself or my paintings as 'genius' during the past month, and because I have nothing to lose, I Googled 'top New York art galleries' found one called David Zwirner which is currently having an Alice Neel exhibit, called them on the phone, told them about my recent New York Times interview, asked how I could submit work, and the woman I spoke to just about hung up on me during the conversation. She said the gallery only deals with artists they already know, which is an attitude I can't really get my head around. This must be what they mean by the designation 'outsider' artist.
If you haven't read through the comments, thanks to Ignatio Nova at Anything At All: The Comic, Joan, and Barry at Silly Platypus for the kind thoughts.

A Barack Obama Portrait For Memorial Day Weekend
Obama 'Light Blues' Portrait- Ebay Art Auction
I have about fifteen other small portraits in progess, but my wife and I decided to have a garage sale over the weekend which has delayed finishing anything. The good thing is that I've been painting a number of plants directly from our garden. Hopefully I'll have a few of those 'plein air' paintings online by Monday.

Hari's Pancake
A commissioned portrait of Hari with a pancake on his head. Thanks, Hari!
Beckie recently created this pastel of Dustin Hoffman, which I purchased for my own collection. Straight-on portraits are difficult, but I don't think there's any mistaking the subject. Lots of personality here. Great job, Beckie!

Pebbles The Cat
Finally! A portrait of Susan Boyle's Pebbles The Cat. Painted from a photo recently shown on Oprah.
I've finally gotten smart enough to post the larger, linked images of my paintings 'actual' size. So, if you have your computer monitor resolution set similar to mine, whatever mine is, that secondary painting will appear very close in size to the original.
The danger of this is that everyone is broke, so if you find a painting of mine that you like you may be tempted to simply glue a frame to your screen. I would think that in time this might become a problem.

Boyle Obama Pancake Divide
On oil painting from a few weeks ago of two popular personalities sharing the same stage though disconnected. Obama listens with pancake amplification, and the very waters separate for Susan's performance, but not even pancakes can cross the great divide. Susan Boyle recently turned down a chance to meet Barack Obama, which seems apropo. The great Boyle Obama crossover will have to wait.
Susan Boyle Snubs Barack Obama - Don Surber
An article on today's HecklerSpray gives a reference to the above painting. I appreciate the include. Basepair has posted a nice photo of the custom Mulder painting commissioned last year.
Two Catholic Themed Paintings, In Progress
The off-scale of the figures is intentional, but something isn't quite right. I suspect this because, while the device of a 'spiritually larger' figure is sound, Padre Pio is still too physical of a representation. I think I need to 'mist him up.'
This is one of a series of images I'm donating to a monastery in Ireland for use as mass cards. The problem here is that the sunset behind the monastery looks a fire, and the fir trees look like smoke! I'll put out the fire later today, and post the original, along with a new John Paul II painting, as an Ebay auction item.

Two Male Nudes, And I'm Back
There's a dearth of interesting but tasteful male nude paintings out there, so I thought I would create a few.

A page of nude male art.
Two males nudes, representing a double disappointment. Me at work again in a warm, familar place, and not knowing what I want in a cold one.
Yes, I'm back. I expected more publicity this week for my 'Painter Of Pancakes' blog, but it didn't come through as promised. I'm disappointed; let's move on.
Looking at my stats, everyone is still over here poking around, so it seem silly to hang out in an empty room. So, here we are again. At least it motivated me to put together a decent 'about' page.
The downside of most of this activity is that I've fallen behind on a number of commissions requested by long-time fans, so my apologies. I could also use some additional work, so this is a great time to order your Christmas portraits. I'm knocked my prices back to what they were before my anticipated success, which is $50 for a 4 by 6, $75 for a 5 by 7 and $100 for an 8 by 10. Think about how busy you'll be in November.
